On July 2, 2023, at approximately 7:20 a.m., 36-year-old Joshua Paul Gephart was found deceased from a gunshot wound in the 5000 block of Boyd Road in Arcata, California. Gephart, originally from Fortuna, had recently been living transiently in the Valley West area of Arcata.
The Arcata Police Department (APD) swiftly initiated a homicide investigation, identifying 24-year-old Gregory Nelson Mattox of McKinleyville as the primary suspect. An arrest warrant was issued for Mattox, who was considered armed and dangerous.
On August 29, 2023, APD detectives, with assistance from the Humboldt and Mendocino County Sheriff's Office SWAT teams, apprehended Mattox in the 13000 block of Bald Hills Road in Orick, California. He was arrested without incident and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges including murder, felon in possession of a firearm, violation of probation, and providing false identity to a peace officer.
The legal proceedings culminated on December 7, 2023, when a Humboldt County jury found Mattox guilty of voluntary manslaughter, felon in possession of a firearm, and providing false information to law enforcement with intent to evade justice. Subsequently, on July 31, 2024, Judge Cockrum sentenced Mattox to 21 years and 8 months in prison for his crimes.

The community of Arcata, while still mourning the loss of Joshua Gephart, has expressed relief at the resolution of the case and the removal of a dangerous individual from the streets.
