On August 8, 2023, at approximately 9:00 PM, Oakland police responded to reports of a shooting in the 500 block of 25th Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered 40-year-old Jerald Larnell Clark II suffering from gunshot wounds. Clark was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
The Oakland Police Department (OPD) swiftly initiated an investigation, leading to the arrest of 34-year-old Oakland resident, Amadi J. Monroe, on August 11, 2023.
Monroe was charged with second-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm. His criminal history includes prior convictions for assault with a semiautomatic firearm in 2007 and robbery in 2008.
Further investigation revealed that Monroe was also a suspect in the death of his ex-girlfriend, Brenda Diaz, who was found deceased in his vehicle on August 11, 2023. Monroe allegedly confessed to both homicides, claiming he believed both victims were involved in a plot against him.
Monroe's arrest was the result of collaborative efforts among various OPD units, including the Homicide Investigators, Tactical Operations Team, Intelligence Unit, Violent Crimes Operation Center (VCOC), and Ceasefire. The Alameda County District Attorney's Office has charged Monroe with multiple felonies related to these incidents.
As of December 2024, Monroe remains in custody, awaiting trial for the charges against him.
