On August 10, 2023, at approximately 11:36 a.m., Merced County Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of gunshots near the 16500 block of Bloss Avenue in Delhi, California. Upon arrival, they discovered 58-year-old Martha Mendoza deceased from gunshot wounds.
Through their investigation, detectives identified 26-year-old Ricardo Garcia Jr. of Delhi as the primary suspect. Later that evening, around 8:35 p.m., authorities executed a search warrant at a residence on Darlington Street in Delhi, where Garcia was apprehended without incident. He was subsequently booked into the Merced County Jail on murder charges.
The relationship between Mendoza and Garcia remains unclear, and authorities have not disclosed a possible motive for the shooting. Neighbors expressed shock, noting that Garcia came from a reputable family. One neighbor remarked, "It makes me sad... We don't know the whole story, but it makes me sad because I know the mother must be crying."
