Kiara Austin, a 19-year-old mother of three, tragically lost her life on April 28, 2019, in Central Fresno, California. On that fateful night, Kiara and her boyfriend, Brian Maxey, were visiting friends at The Parks at Fig Garden apartment complex. As they were leaving, they were confronted by a group of gang members who questioned their presence and demanded they leave. As they attempted to drive away, the gang members opened fire, unleashing a barrage of 26 bullets.
Kiara and Brian, caught in the crossfire, were struck by the gunfire. In a desperate attempt to escape, they crashed their vehicle into a brick wall and subsequently into a nearby canal, leading to their untimely deaths.
The investigation into the double murder led to the arrest of Donovan Kelley, who was later found guilty of the shootings. Kelley was sentenced to 200 years to life in prison by the Fresno County Superior Court. The court proceedings revealed that Kiara and Brian were innocent victims, simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. The senseless violence that claimed their lives also left three others injured. The case highlighted the pervasive issue of gang violence in the area and the devastating impact it has on innocent lives.
