On September 4, 2023, 18-year-old Ashley Guzman and her partner, 21-year-old Carlos Loera, were fatally shot while seated in their parked vehicle in the 1000 block of West 253rd Street in Harbor City, California. Their one-year-old son was in a child safety seat in the backseat at the time of the attack. A suspect approached the vehicle on foot and fired multiple rounds into the car before fleeing the scene. Loera was pronounced dead at the scene, while Guzman was transported to a hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The infant sustained injuries from bullet fragments but survived and was subsequently released to family members.
In January 2024, the Los Angeles Police Department arrested 20-year-old Dion Johnson of Wilmington in connection with this case. Johnson faces multiple charges, including three counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder, related to a series of shootings in the Harbor City and San Pedro areas during September 2023. Authorities believe these incidents are gang-related.
The tragic deaths of Guzman and Loera have deeply affected the Harbor City community.
