On November 6, 2023, retired Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) Sergeant Greg Hovland, aged 67, was found deceased at his residence in Quartz Hill, California. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner determined the cause of death to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, ruling it a suicide.
Hovland's death was one of four suicides involving LASD personnel within a 24-hour period.
The other individuals included Commander Darren Harris, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head at his home in Santa Clarita, and two other employees whose identities were initially withheld.
The LASD community was deeply affected by these events. Sheriff Robert Luna expressed profound concern for the well-being of department members, emphasizing the importance of mutual support among colleagues during such challenging times. The department offered confidential counseling services and peer support programs to assist personnel and their families.
