The incident that led to his death began earlier that day when a motorist, Demonte Antone Thomas, ran over Davis' poodle with his 1985 white Chevy Blazer. Davis, who lived in an apartment complex on East Avenue H-14 with his pregnant girlfriend and their young son, confronted Thomas, demanding that he pay for the dog's medical expenses.
The two men exchanged heated words before Thomas drove away. Davis took his injured dog to a veterinarian, but unfortunately, the dog did not survive.
Later that night, Thomas returned to Davis' residence with a group of five to seven men. He was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder. The case went to trial, and in August 2017, Thomas was found guilty of the murder of Michael Lamont Davis. He was scheduled to be sentenced later that month.
