On November 21, 2023, at approximately 11:30 PM, Oakland Police Department (OPD) officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 6900 block of Bancroft Avenue in East Oakland. Upon arrival, they discovered 39-year-old Johnny James Johnson Jr. seated inside a vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention from OPD and Oakland Fire Department personnel, Johnson was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Following an intensive investigation, OPD identified 42-year-old James Wheeler, an Oakland resident with a history of criminal convictions dating back to his juvenile years, as the primary suspect in Johnson's homicide. Wheeler was apprehended on November 24, 2023, through the collaborative efforts of OPD's Violent Crime Operations Center, Patrol units, ARGUS, and Homicide Investigators. Subsequently, the Alameda County District Attorney's Office filed charges against Wheeler for his involvement in the homicide.
