The shooting occurred during a birthday party attended by over 300 people in the Uptown district. McCrary was an innocent bystander caught in crossfire when gunshots erupted at the scene. Another individual, Craig Fletcher-Cooks, was also killed while attempting to protect his girlfriend during an altercation.
