On January 28, 2024, at approximately 2:25 a.m., Bakersfield Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 10 block of Monterey Street in east Bakersfield. Upon arrival, they discovered 27-year-old Joseph Anthony Reynaga lying in the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds. He was promptly transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 3 a.m.
In the initial stages of the investigation, authorities did not release any suspect information. The crime scene on East Monterey Street was closed off for several hours as detectives gathered evidence and interviewed potential witnesses.
