In the pre-dawn hours of a Friday in Phoenix, Arizona, a violent altercation left 16-year-old Salvador Gomez Medina and two other young men dead. The shooting, which occurred on August 20, 2021, near the intersection of 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road, was the tragic culmination of what police believe to be a prearranged 'business transaction' that spiraled into a deadly shootout.
The night's chaos also claimed the lives of 19-year-old Victor Manuel Cruz and 19-year-old Avery Young.
A fourth teenager was also struck by gunfire but was expected to survive their injuries. The initial investigation suggested that two groups of individuals had planned to meet, a rendezvous that ultimately erupted in a hail of bullets.
Responding to the scene, Phoenix police officers discovered a grim tableau. One adult and two teenagers were found with gunshot wounds and were rushed to a local hospital, where the adult and one of the teens were pronounced dead. Two other men managed to transport themselves to the hospital from the scene; one was uninjured, while the other succumbed to his wounds upon arrival.
