On June 15, 2024, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Anaheim Police and Anaheim Fire & Rescue personnel responded to reports of a shooting in the 800 block of West Cottonwood Circle, a residential neighborhood in Anaheim, California. Upon arrival, they discovered that two adult male victims had already been transported to a local hospital by witnesses. One of the victims, identified as 30-year-old Anaheim resident Jose Andres Abrego, had sustained at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at
the hospital. The second victim had been stabbed at least once and was expected to survive his injuries.
The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Santa Ana resident Jannett Cureno, fled the scene before officers arrived. Through their investigation, detectives were able to identify Cureno as the suspect involved in the attack. She was located and arrested without incident around 1 p.m. on the same day in the 300 block of Newhope Street in Santa Ana. Cureno was subsequently booked into the Anaheim Detention Facility on charges of murder and was held in lieu of $1 million bail.
Authorities described the incident as gang-related but have not disclosed further details, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
