On July 18, 2024, at approximately 3:33 p.m., Long Beach police officers responded to a shooting at the Extended Stay America hotel located at 4105 E. Willow Street. Upon arrival, they discovered 19-year-old Jai’Quan Henry Granberry, a resident of Long Beach, suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body. Despite immediate medical attention and transportation to a local hospital by the Long Beach Fire Department, Granberry succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation led homicide detectives to identify the suspect as 19-year-old Long Beach resident Mathew De Diego. Detectives determined that Granberry and De Diego were friends and had been staying together at the hotel at the time of the shooting. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation. Evidence, including a firearm, was collected at the scene and is undergoing processing.
On July 23, 2024, De Diego was arrested by Special Investigation Division detectives after committing a second murder in the 5900 block of Lime Avenue. He was booked for murder, with bail set at $3,000,000. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office received the case details for Granberry's murder on July 25, 2024, followed by the second case on July 26, 2024.
