Winfred Avant Jr., a 30-year-old Black man known to family and friends as "Bookie," was remembered as a generous and caring person who brought joy to those around him. His family said he was the light of a room, a standup guy who enjoyed cooking and dancing and cared deeply for his loved ones. One relative recalled that even when he was going through his own struggles, he always projected happiness to others.
In the early morning of October 4, 2024, a shooting occurred near the intersection of Westside Road and Meadowbrook Drive in Redding, California. When emergency personnel arrived, they found that two men had been killed and three other adults had been wounded. The injured were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The two men who died at the scene were identified as Winfred Avant Jr.
and 22-year-old Isaiah Jacob Stanley, both residents of Redding.
The Redding Police Department quickly identified two suspects in the shooting: 19-year-old Andrew Greer-Herrera of Lookout, California, and 18-year-old Trevon Evanoff of Redding. On October 6, Evanoff was apprehended in Reno, Nevada, by the Sparks Police Department. Two days later, on October 8, Greer-Herrera was arrested in Siskiyou County, California, following a multi-agency law enforcement effort. Authorities noted that anyone found to have helped Greer-Herrera evade capture could also face felony charges.
The Shasta County District Attorney's Office filed charges against both men, including two counts of first-degree murder and three counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm. In April 2025, Greer-Herrera and Evanoff appeared in Shasta County Courthouse for a plea and disposition hearing. At that time, their preliminary hearing was scheduled for April 22, 2025. The case against both suspects was proceeding through the court system as of April 2025.
