On March 16, 2024, at approximately 2:20 p.m., Redding Police Department officers responded to a report of a gunshot victim at a residence on the 3500 block of Ricardo Avenue in Redding, California. Upon arrival, they discovered 22-year-old Paul Nelson deceased inside the home, having suffered a fatal gunshot wound.
Investigators determined that multiple individuals were present in the residence at the time of the shooting. Among them was 19-year-old Ethan Couch, who was reportedly handling a firearm when it discharged, striking Nelson. Following the incident, Couch and the other individuals fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.
On March 18, Couch voluntarily met with detectives at the Redding Police Department, accompanied by a witness. During the interview, Couch admitted to handling the firearm that discharged and resulted in Nelson's death. Subsequently, he was arrested and booked into the Shasta County Jail.
Initially, authorities considered charging Couch with manslaughter; however, he was ultimately held without bail on charges including murder, conspiracy, and second-degree robbery.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Nelson's death remains ongoing.
