Thomas Umberto Sladek, a 21-year-old resident of Redding, California, tragically lost his life on January 26, 2014. Thomas was known for his love of the outdoors, sports, and music. He worked as a sales associate at a local Walmart and had plans to enroll at Shasta College in the spring. Raised by his mother, Desiree Lee Hill, until her passing in 2012, Thomas was a beloved son, brother, and friend.
On the evening of January 26, 2014, Thomas was found with gunshot wounds in his car at Alta Mesa Park in Redding. He was transported to Mercy Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. Witnesses reported seeing two young men approach Thomas's car, engage in a conversation or argument, and then one of the men fired into the vehicle before fleeing the scene.
The investigation led to the arrest of three suspects: Logan Jackson Barnhart, Dillon Ray Sims, and Raquan Anthony Blake Matthews.
Barnhart was arrested at his home on Newbury Lane, while Sims and Matthews turned themselves in to the police. All three were charged with murder, attempted robbery, and conspiracy. Matthews, who was 17 at the time, was identified as the shooter and was tried as an adult alongside Sims and Barnhart.
The court proceedings revealed that the incident stemmed from a planned robbery disguised as a drug deal. Thomas and his friends had gone to the park to buy oxycodone, but the suspects intended to rob them. During the confrontation, Matthews fired two shots into the car, hitting Thomas. The suspects were denied bail, and the investigation continued as the community sought justice for Thomas's untimely death.
