On October 19, 2024, at approximately 6:03 p.m., Richmond Police responded to a report of a gunshot in the 400 block of 21st Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered 28-year-old Richmond resident Geovanni Ortiz Gutierrez inside a vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical responders pronounced him deceased at the scene around 6:15 p.m.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Gutierrez was shot at least once while seated in his car.
Authorities believe the suspect was also in the vehicle at the time of the shooting and fled the scene immediately afterward. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the Richmond Police Department continues to actively investigate the homicide.
Prior to his death, Gutierrez had multiple encounters with law enforcement. On July 26, 2024, he was arrested by Richmond Police in Contra Costa County on charges of extortion. Earlier that year, on June 29, he faced several charges, including possession of a firearm and controlled substances, inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, and receiving or concealing stolen property. Additionally, on September 9, 2023, Gutierrez was arrested for being an addict in possession of a firearm and carrying a concealed firearm upon his person.
Despite these previous arrests, no information has been released linking Gutierrez's past activities to his murder. The Richmond Police Department urges anyone with information regarding this case to come forward, as they continue their efforts to identify and apprehend the suspect responsible for Gutierrez's death.
