In a tragic turn of events on June 15, 2023, in Sequatchie, Tennessee, six-year-old Lilyana Perez was killed in a devastating murder-suicide. The horrific incident also claimed the lives of her mother, Brittnee Nicole Perez, 34; her sister, Vanessa Nicole Perez, 11; her brother, Nicholas Jaden Perez, 2; and her grandmother, Regina Ann Barnett, 52.
The perpetrator was identified as 48-year-old Gary Barnett, the estranged husband of Regina Barnett. Authorities reported that Gary Barnett fatally shot his estranged wife, his stepdaughter Brittnee, and his three grandchildren before setting their residence on Pine Street ablaze and then taking his own life.
When emergency services arrived at the scene, they found the house engulfed in flames. After extinguishing the fire, they discovered the bodies of the six individuals inside. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirmed the identities of the deceased and the nature of the crime as a murder-suicide.
There was a lone survivor of the tragic event, Aaron Pursley, who was present at the residence during the attack. Pursley sustained gunshot wounds but managed to escape to a neighbor's house to call for help. He was subsequently hospitalized for his injuries. Marion County Sheriff Bo Burnette described the incident as one of the most horrific crime scenes he had witnessed in his career, noting that deputies had previously responded to domestic calls at the address, but there was no indication of such a violent escalation.
