On a tragic day in Sequatchie, Tennessee, 34-year-old Brittnee Nicole Perez, a female, lost her life in a horrific act of violence that also claimed the lives of several family members. The incident, which occurred on June 15, 2023, was a murder-suicide orchestrated by her stepfather, 48-year-old Gary Don Barnett.
The devastating event unfolded at a residence on Pine Street, where authorities were called to the scene of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered the house engulfed in flames. After the fire was extinguished, the bodies of six individuals were found inside.
The victims were identified as Brittnee Nicole Perez, her three children: 11-year-old Vanessa Nicole Perez, 6-year-old Lilyana Perez, and 2-year-old Nicholas Perez, and her mother, 52-year-old Regina Ann Barnett. The investigation, led by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, concluded that Gary Don Barnett, who was Regina's estranged husband, had fatally shot his wife, her daughter Brittnee, and his three grandchildren before setting the house on fire and taking his own life.
There was one survivor of the attack, a man identified as Aaron Pursley, who was reportedly engaged to Brittnee. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds but managed to escape to a neighbor's house to call for help. In the months prior to the incident, Regina Barnett had sought and obtained an order of protection against her husband, expressing fear for her life. The perpetrator, Gary Don Barnett, is deceased, and therefore no arrests were made in connection with the murders.
