Regina Patterson Barnett, a 52-year-old woman, was shot and killed by her estranged husband, Gary Barnett, on June 15, 2023. The violence of that day also claimed the lives of Regina's daughter, Brittnee Nicole Perez, and Brittnee's three young children.
Just a month prior to the fatal shooting, Regina had sought protection from the courts, expressing a chilling fear for her life. In her request for a restraining order, she had informed the court that her estranged husband possessed a significant number of firearms and that she was afraid he would 'get drunk and shoot me.' Her court filings also detailed the daily verbal abuse she endured and her profound fear for her safety. Despite a restraining order being in place, the very outcome she had dreaded came to pass.
On that Thursday evening, Gary Barnett went on a shooting rampage at his residence, a home that would soon be engulfed in flames. Inside, authorities would later discover the bodies of Regina, her daughter, and her three grandchildren. Gary Barnett had also taken his own life, bringing the total number of deceased to six in what Sheriff Bo Burnett described as one of the worst incidents he had encountered in his career. The tragedy sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting a devastating and fatal escalation of domestic violence.
