In the summer of 2023, the life of LaToria Nevels-Mitchell, a 27-year-old Black woman from Nashville, Tennessee, was tragically cut short. On the evening of July 14th, events escalated from a public dispute to a fatal encounter outside her East Nashville residence.
Earlier that night, LaToria, known to her friends and family as 'LT,' was involved in an altercation with her boyfriend, 27-year-old Lewis Thomas II, at a local nightclub.
The disagreement led to Thomas reportedly pushing Nevels-Mitchell before he was escorted out of the establishment. Later, around 11:40 p.m., the conflict resumed when Thomas arrived at her home in the 500 block of South 6th Street.
Another confrontation began inside the apartment, prompting Nevels-Mitchell to go outside. It was there that Thomas allegedly shot her multiple times. Reports indicate that he continued to fire even after she had fallen to the pavement. After the shooting, Thomas fled the scene.
Authorities located Lewis Thomas II shortly after on James Robertson Parkway. During questioning, he implicated himself in the shooting and admitted to disposing of the pistol in a wooded area. Thomas was subsequently arrested and faced charges of criminal homicide and evidence tampering. He was held without bond.
LaToria Nevels-Mitchell was remembered as a cherished mother to her 5-year-old son and a vital member of the Tennessee Trojans Women's Football Team, where she was considered 'the heart of the team.' Her loved ones recalled her as a radiant person with a profound love for life.
