On the night of August 2, 2023, at approximately 11:15 p.m., Knoxville Police Department (KPD) officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 2600 block of Copeland Street. Upon arrival, they discovered 22-year-old Joseph Norris suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Officers administered immediate medical aid before Norris was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
