In the late hours of an August evening in 2023, tragedy struck in Nashville, Tennessee, forever altering the lives of the Rivera Garcia family. Jose Fernando Rivera Garcia, a 35-year-old man, found himself in a harrowing situation on Peach Creek Crescent. It was there that he made a desperate call to 911, reporting that he had been shot by three men who were attempting to rob him.
When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Jose Fernando Rivera Garcia in the driver's seat
of his gray Ford Escape, suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency services transported him to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but tragically, his injuries proved to be fatal. The initial investigation pointed towards an attempted robbery as the motive for this senseless act of violence, with the three suspects having fled the scene on foot.
Weeks later, a significant breakthrough came in the investigation. Homicide Unit detectives, aided by ballistic science, identified 19-year-old Jamonte Wellington as a suspect in the murder of Rivera Garcia. Wellington was already under investigation for another fatal shooting that had occurred in July of the same year. On August 23, 2023, detectives with the Specialized Investigations Division located and arrested Wellington. During an interview with investigators, Wellington implicated himself in the murder of Jose Fernando Rivera Garcia. He was subsequently charged with two counts of criminal homicide for both the August and July killings. The investigation revealed that Rivera Garcia was killed during an attempted robbery.
