In the early morning hours of August 9, 2023, a dispute between two colleagues would end in tragedy outside an Amazon Fulfillment Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Javontae Aveion Moon, a 19-year-old Black male, was shot in the head at close range as he left his job as a packer and sorter. Emergency services arrived at the scene on Discovery Drive to find Moon with a life-threatening injury.
He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he fought for his life for several days before succumbing to his injuries on August 14, 2023.
The investigation into the shooting led the Chattanooga Police Department to identify 20-year-old D'ante Jones, a fellow Amazon employee, as the primary suspect. The conflict between the two men had reportedly been escalating for about two weeks, centering around a female co-worker. On the morning of the shooting, Moon and Jones had an argument in the Amazon parking lot. Following this confrontation, Jones clocked out of work, took a ride-share home to retrieve a. 45 caliber handgun, and returned to the facility. He then waited for approximately an hour and a half for Moon to exit the building.
Surveillance footage captured the moment Jones, dressed in black, approached Moon around 4:30 a.m. and shot him once in the face. Jones was swiftly apprehended and initially charged with attempted first-degree murder and possession of a firearm during a felony. After Moon's death, the charges against Jones were upgraded to first-degree murder. During a preliminary hearing, Jones confessed to the shooting, citing the ongoing dispute as his motive. He remains in custody at the Hamilton County Jail and Detention Center on a $1,000,000 bond, awaiting trial for the murder of Javontae Moon.
