In the Soulsville neighborhood of Memphis, a young life was abruptly cut short on a summer afternoon. On August 21, 2023, 19-year-old Jalen Murray was shot in the area of Edith Avenue and South Orleans Street. First responders arrived to a distressing scene, finding Murray with a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to Regional One Hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced deceased.
The male victim’s death launched a homicide investigation by the Memphis Police Department.
In the initial stages of their inquiry, investigators sought the public's help, releasing information about a vehicle of interest—a red Chevrolet Tahoe—and expressing a desire to speak with a passenger who may have witnessed the fatal encounter. The search for answers continued as the community mourned the loss of a young man.
A significant development in the case came a month later with the arrest of 18-year-old Eugene McShane. McShane was subsequently charged with the murder of Jalen Murray. It was revealed that both the victim and the accused were participants in the same youth program. According to reports, a witness overheard McShane demanding a gun from Murray in an alley shortly before the fatal shot was fired. In a troubling turn of events, it was also discovered that at the time of the shooting, McShane was wearing a GPS ankle monitor as a result of a prior aggravated robbery case.
