Kelby DVonte Bugg Shorty, a 7-year-old African American boy from Memphis, Tennessee, lost his life in a senseless act of violence on the Fourth of July in 2021. The young boy, known affectionately as 'Bugg,' was outside with other children, enjoying the holiday festivities and setting off fireworks on North Montgomery Street when the celebration was tragically cut short. A vehicle approached, and an individual emerged, shouting before opening fire into the crowd.
Kelby was struck and died at the scene, while two women were also wounded in the shooting.
The investigation into the young boy's death moved swiftly, and within days, authorities identified and apprehended three suspects in connection with the fatal shooting. Jordan Pittman, Angieline Kennedy, and Adoniss Wright were taken into custody. The motive for the shooting is believed to have stemmed from an earlier argument that had taken place at a nearby gas station. The incident sent shockwaves through the Memphis community, leading to vigils and calls for an end to gun violence.
In the months that followed, the legal process began to unfold for those accused of cutting short a young life full of promise. In January 2022, a grand jury indicted Jordan Pittman and Angieline Kennedy on multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and reckless endangerment. Adoniss Wright faced a charge of being an accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. The indictments marked a significant step towards seeking justice for Kelby and his grieving family.
