In the early morning hours of September 10, 2023, a violent encounter in a motel parking lot in Nashville, Tennessee, claimed the life of 27-year-old Hykame Moncott Knowles. Born in Miami, Florida, on October 22, 1995, Knowles was in the prime of his life when the tragic events unfolded.
Just after midnight, an exchange of gunfire erupted in the parking lot of the Somatel motel located on Metroplex Drive in the southern part of the city.
During the altercation, Knowles sustained a gunshot wound to his hip area. He was privately transported to St. Thomas Midtown Hospital for initial treatment before being transferred to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Despite undergoing surgery, Knowles succumbed to his injuries later that same day. Another individual, a maintenance and security worker at the motel, suffered a graze wound to the neck during the incident but did not require medical treatment.
In the wake of the shooting, detectives from the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department began an intensive investigation. They interviewed a number of individuals who were present at the scene as they worked to piece together the events of that fatal morning and identify those responsible for the gunfire.
The investigation led to a significant development with the arrest of a suspect. Surveillance footage from the motel reportedly showed a woman, identified as Latoya Hedger, firing a handgun at the vehicle Knowles was in at the time of the shooting. Subsequently, Hedger was arrested and charged with a felony in connection with the death of Hykame Knowles. The case against her is proceeding through the justice system.
