In the late hours of a Sunday evening in Knoxville, Tennessee, a domestic disturbance call set in motion a chain of events that would end in tragedy. On October 1, 2023, Knox County Sheriff's Office Deputy Tucker Blakely, a 29-year-old male, and his partner, Deputy James Loft, arrived at a residence on Denver Lane to a volatile scene. Inside the home, Matthew Logan Rose was in the master bedroom, and as the deputies entered the room, an exchange of gunfire erupted.
Deputy Blakely was
struck by the gunfire and rushed to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries the following day, October 2, 2023. In a final act of service, his organs were donated. The suspect, 30-year-old Matthew Logan Rose, was killed by return fire at the scene. An autopsy later revealed that Rose had a blood alcohol content almost twice the legal limit and had marijuana, cocaine, and several prescription medications in his system.
The investigation into the shooting, conducted by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, has since been closed. The District Attorney determined that the actions of the second officer who shot and killed Rose were justified, and no charges would be filed. It was later revealed that Rose had a history of domestic violence, having been charged with the offense in Michigan just months before the fatal encounter. In the aftermath of the tragic event, Deputy Blakely's widow, Katarina Blakely, filed a $10 million lawsuit against Rose's widow, alleging negligence.
