In the early morning hours of January 22, 2024, a residence in North Knoxville became the scene of a fatal confrontation. Inside the home on Chesswood Drive, a dispute between two men who were known to each other escalated, resulting in the death of 47-year-old Benjamin Vellines, a White/Caucasian male. Knoxville Police Department officers responded to a report of a shooting at the address at approximately 2:50 a.m. and found Vellines suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly determined that the shooting was the culmination of an altercation. The other man involved in the confrontation was detained at the residence and taken in for questioning by police. As part of their investigation, authorities recovered two firearms from the home.
