On the evening of April 12, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the night at The Cascades apartment complex in Antioch, Tennessee, leaving a young man's life cut tragically short. Vidal Tyrelle York, a 23-year-old Black / African American male, was found lying in the parking lot by Metro Nashville Police Department officers who responded to the scene around 9:30 p.m. He was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
A 19-year-old who had arrived with York was also wounded in the shooting but sustained non-critical injuries and was later treated and released from a local hospital.
In the immediate aftermath, the motive for the shooting was a mystery to detectives, who believed the assailant had fled in a vehicle shortly after the shots were fired. The Homicide and Specialized Investigation Division of the Metro Nashville Police Department diligently pursued leads in the case. For nearly six months, the question of who was responsible for York's death lingered. Then, on October 7, 2024, a significant break in the case came with the arrest of 22-year-old Brian Connard Jr.
Connard was taken into custody after a vehicle he was a passenger in parked on Hermitage Avenue. Inside the vehicle, officers discovered three guns, one of which had been reported stolen. Following an investigation led by Homicide Unit Detective Phil Klarer, Connard was indicted on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Vidal York. A Criminal Court judge set his bond at $100,000.
Vidal York, a graduate of Smyrna High School, was remembered for his infectious smile, kindness, and humility. He was a talented swimmer who had received several scholarship offers for his athletic abilities and also had a passion for football, basketball, track, music, and fashion. The community was left to mourn the loss of a promising young life as the legal process against his alleged killer began to unfold.
