In the spring of 2024, a quiet neighborhood in Atoka, Tennessee, was shattered by a violent act that claimed the life of Kristen Johnson, a 44-year-old Caucasian woman. On the evening of April 22nd, Johnson was fatally shot inside her home. The tragedy unfolded in the presence of her 16-year-old son, who also sustained a gunshot wound to his hand. Despite his injury, the teenager managed to escape the horrific scene and run to neighbors for help, alerting them that an assailant was still inside
with his mother.
When Tipton County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the residence, they found a tense and dangerous situation. The suspect was still inside the house with Kristen Johnson. A period of negotiation followed, lasting approximately 45 minutes, as law enforcement worked to bring a peaceful resolution to the standoff. Eventually, the suspect, identified as 52-year-old Donald Ray Parker Jr., surrendered to the authorities and was taken into custody. Upon entering the home, deputies discovered Kristen Johnson deceased from a gunshot wound.
The investigation into the tragic event suggested a premeditated act. Sheriff Shannon Beasley noted that Parker had parked his vehicle some distance from Johnson's home, indicating a deliberate approach. Following his arrest, Parker reportedly confessed to the shooting. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and aggravated stalking. This was not Parker's first violent encounter with law enforcement. In 2013, he was involved in an incident in Olive Branch, Mississippi, where he allegedly brandished a firearm at a repairman and later pointed it at responding officers, resulting in him being shot by the police.
Kristen Johnson was remembered as a loving mother and daughter. She worked as a Family Engagement Specialist with the Early Childhood Department at Memphis-Shelby Schools. She is survived by her son, Logan Johnson, her parents, Russell and Patricia Johnson, and her brother, Eric Johnson.
