In the early hours of January 30, 2018, the quiet grounds of the former Dominican Retreat House in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania, became the scene of a fatal shooting. The victim was Joseph Kohler III, a 34-year-old man from Johnstown who had traveled to the Philadelphia area a few days prior. His body was discovered by a caretaker on the property with a gunshot wound to his upper chest.
The subsequent investigation into his death would lead authorities to a 24-year-old Philadelphia man named Antonio Lindsay.
Investigators learned that Kohler had driven an acquaintance from his hometown to Philadelphia on January 27 and had remained in the area. According to witness accounts, in the hours before his death, Kohler was seen with Lindsay. The two men reportedly exited a vehicle together and walked up a hill on the retreat house property, out of sight. Witnesses then heard gunshots, and shortly after, Lindsay was seen returning to the car alone before it drove off. A motive in the shooting later emerged, with witnesses telling police that Lindsay blamed Kohler for a recent arrest where he was found in possession of a significant amount of heroin.
An arrest warrant for Antonio Lindsay was issued on February 8, 2018, and a manhunt ensued. On March 1, 2018, he was apprehended in Philadelphia by a task force comprised of U.S. Marshals and Philadelphia Police. Lindsay was charged with first-degree murder, third-degree murder, and other related offenses. He was arraigned and, due to the nature of the charges, was denied bail and remanded to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility to await trial.
Prosecutors later announced they would not seek the death penalty, but if convicted of first-degree murder, Lindsay would face a mandatory life sentence. Following a trial, Antonio Lindsay was convicted of third-degree murder and related offenses. He was subsequently sentenced to a term of thirty-one to sixty-two years of imprisonment. An appeal of his sentence in 2020 was unsuccessful, with the judgment being affirmed.
