In the late hours of a summer evening in Philadelphia, the life of 16-year-old Calvin 'CJ' Johnson IV was tragically cut short. On June 9, 2023, at approximately 10:35 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood. They discovered the young male, a resident of Drexel Hill, lying in the street on the 2500 block of North 32nd Street, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his torso.
Officers rushed him to Temple University Hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead at 11:07 p.m.
Calvin, remembered by his family as a loyal, kind, and respectful young man with a bright smile, had a passion for anime and enjoyed collecting Pokémon cards and playing on his PlayStation 5. He was musically talented and had aspirations for his future after graduating high school. On the night he was killed, Calvin and three friends had left an Airbnb party after a fight broke out and were trying to get an Uber ride home. While waiting on a dark corner, they were approached by a group of young men. One of them pushed Calvin against a car, held a gun to his chest, and attempted to rob him. When Calvin had nothing to give, the gunman shot him three times before fleeing the scene.
In the months that followed, the city offered a $20,000 reward for information that would lead to an arrest and conviction. The investigation involved numerous interviews and a review of phone records. On November 2, 2023, the efforts of the Philadelphia Police led to the arrest of two suspects in connection with the murder. Seventeen-year-old Jermaine Williford Jr. was arrested and charged with murder and illegal gun possession, among other related crimes. Another 16-year-old, who was reportedly present during the attempted robbery but is not believed to be the shooter, was also charged with gun crimes. Police have indicated they are still searching for two other teenagers they believe were involved in the incident. The case against the arrested individuals is currently pending trial.
