In the city of Philadelphia, a 15-year veteran of the Philadelphia Housing Authority Police Department, 54-year-old Officer Ivan J. Walker, was killed in the line of duty. The incident unfolded at the Plymouth Hall apartment building located at 2201 West Venango Street. Officer Walker was in the process of arresting a man for disorderly conduct when a struggle ensued inside the lobby.
The physical altercation moved outside, where the suspect managed to disarm Officer Walker, taking his
service revolver. The man then shot the officer. A warrant officer from the Philadelphia Common Pleas Court, who happened to be across the street, witnessed the event and shot the suspect as he attempted to flee the scene.
The 39-year-old suspect was later taken into custody when he sought treatment for the gunshot wound he sustained. He was subsequently charged with murder, robbery, and various weapons offenses. After a trial, the suspect was convicted of murder and received a life sentence for the killing of Officer Walker. Officer Walker was survived by his wife and three children.
