Tahmir Hightower was on the cusp of a new and exciting chapter in his life. The 19-year-old Black man from Philadelphia was an aspiring rapper known as 'Saucyboymir' or 'SBM,' but his greatest anticipation was for the birth of his daughter. His girlfriend recalled that after learning she was pregnant, he was smiling from ear to ear, exclaiming, "I'm going to be a great father." Family and friends remembered him as a happy, respectful, and playful young man who was full of life and a leader.
Just weeks after his death, his daughter, Ayuri Malayea Hightower, was born on May 4, 2023.
That future was stolen from him late on a Wednesday evening. On April 19, 2023, Hightower was visiting his old neighborhood in West Philadelphia. At approximately 10:40 p.m., while on the 4900 block of Olive Street, he was ambushed. According to his mother, who later viewed surveillance footage of the incident, two masked individuals came up from behind and shot him. Responding police officers found Hightower on the ground near a vacant lot, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Officers rushed Hightower to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in their patrol vehicle. His injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead shortly after midnight, at 12:08 a.m. on April 20, 2023.
In the weeks that followed, Hightower's mother pleaded for help finding his killers, and the city offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. The investigation progressed, and on Thursday, May 25, 2023, the Philadelphia Police Department announced a breakthrough. A suspect was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder and other related offenses. As of May 2023, the case is pending trial.
