In the East Germantown section of Philadelphia, on what should have been a joyous celebration of his 12th birthday, Laron 'L.J.' Williams Jr., a 12-year-old Black male, was tragically killed. On the afternoon of June 22, 2023, the young boy, known for his big personality and as a jokester, had just left a neighbor's house where he had gone to get lunch. As he crossed the 700 block of East Locust Avenue to return to the home his family had lived in since the 1970s, gunfire erupted.
A man with a rifle exited a vehicle and began shooting down the street, firing at least 11 shots.
Laron was caught in the crossfire of what authorities believe was a targeted shooting related to an ongoing drug dispute. He was struck multiple times in the back and collapsed at the steps of his home. His parents were with him until police arrived and rushed him to Einstein Medical Center, but his injuries were too severe, and he died shortly after. Two other men, 30-year-old Khalif Chambers of Germantown and 47-year-old Riley Darden of Norristown, were also struck multiple times and died from their injuries. Police believe at least one of these men was the intended target.
As of late 2023, no arrests had been made in the triple homicide that claimed the life of the Mastery Charter School Pastorius-Richardson Elementary student. The Philadelphia Police Department has continued to ask for the public's assistance in solving the case. A substantial reward has been offered for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the shooting. Detectives are urging anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward as they continue to investigate the death of an innocent boy on his birthday.
