On the morning of July 8, 2023, 38-year-old Kandace L. Mervin, a female from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, was tragically killed in a shooting that stemmed from a domestic dispute. The incident unfolded in the early hours of the morning, forever altering the lives of her loved ones.
Authorities had been called to Mervin's home around 4:12 a.m. that Saturday due to a disturbance.
After their intervention, police directed Michael Lyles Jr., who was 34 years old at the time, to vacate the premises. Although he initially complied with the officers' orders, the situation took a devastating turn a short while later. Approximately 45 minutes after being told to leave, Lyles returned to the residence. It was upon his return that the fatal shots were fired, ending Kandace Mervin's life.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement located and arrested Michael Lyles Jr. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Kandace Mervin. The Johnstown Police Department faced scrutiny from some members of the community regarding their handling of the initial disturbance call, with questions raised as to why Lyles was not taken into custody at that time.
