Keith Darnell Boggs, a 61-year-old Black/African American male from Coatesville, Pennsylvania, was killed on the morning of August 19, 2023, after what authorities described as a dispute inside the home he shared with his roommate. Police were called around 8:41 a.m. to a residence on the 200 block of Graham Avenue in Coatesville for a reported shooting. When officers arrived, they found Boggs unresponsive on the front steps of the home, suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders transported him to Paoli Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators said the violence followed an argument over a dog between Boggs and his roommate, 83-year-old Uley Hines of Coatesville. A witness who also lived in the home told police she heard the two men arguing, then heard Boggs take the dog upstairs and into the residence. Moments later, she heard gunshots. According to accounts attributed to investigators, the witness then heard Hines say words to the effect that he had told Boggs to stop bothering him, followed by the sound of Boggs falling.
Authorities later said Boggs suffered three gunshot wounds, including wounds to his chest and arm. Officers also reported seeing signs of blood inside the residence, including a bloody shoe print near the front entry area. Investigators reviewed video connected to the scene, including footage showing Hines’s vehicle leaving the residence shortly after the shooting. Hines was arrested the same day.
The Chester County District Attorney’s Office and Coatesville Police Department announced Hines’s arrest on August 21, 2023. He was charged with first-degree murder, third-degree murder, possession of an instrument of crime, and a weapons offense. Because of the seriousness of the charges, he was remanded to Chester County Prison without bail or in lieu of bail. Officials described the shooting as a senseless act that left the community grieving.
Boggs’s obituary described his death as a tragic event for his family. He left behind a daughter, relatives in Coatesville and elsewhere, and family members who mourned him after his remains were to be cremated according to his wishes. Public reporting portrayed the killing as especially shocking because it happened inside a shared household and allegedly grew out of a domestic dispute over something as ordinary as a dog.
Available online records and reporting show an arrest and filed murder charges against Uley Hines, but I did not find any online source showing that he was convicted, tried, sentenced, or punished through a final criminal judgment. Later obituary records state that Uley Macey Hines Sr. died on November 23, 2024, at age 84, after a lengthy illness. Because no reliable online source located showed a conviction or sentencing before his death, the public record available online appears to end with the murder charges and Hines’s later death rather than a completed trial or sentence.
