In the early morning hours of September 30, 2023, a dispute in a Lancaster, Pennsylvania parking lot turned fatal, claiming the life of 38-year-old Edward Gardner. The male victim was discovered by Lancaster City Bureau of Police officers around 1:19 a.m. in the 900 block of South Duke Street, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 2:00 a.m. An autopsy later confirmed that Gardner's death was a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into Gardner's death quickly pointed to one primary suspect: Terrance McCain, also known as Terry White. Investigators utilized surveillance footage from nearby businesses and social media to identify McCain as the individual who had engaged in a confrontation with Gardner. According to court documents and video evidence, the two men were arguing in the parking lot of the former Capps Bar when McCain retrieved a handgun from a vehicle. The argument escalated, and McCain fired three shots at Gardner from approximately ten feet away, striking him. Prosecutors later argued that McCain had ample opportunity to de-escalate the situation but instead chose to resort to violence, suggesting the motive was jealousy and personal animus.
Following the shooting, a warrant was issued for McCain's arrest, and he was considered armed and dangerous. On October 3, 2023, just days after the incident, Terrance McCain, then 37 years old, turned himself in to the Lancaster City police, accompanied by his attorney. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, third-degree murder, and recklessly endangering another person.
In November of the following year, a Lancaster County jury found Terrance Tyrone McCain Jr. guilty of third-degree murder and recklessly endangering another person in connection with Edward Gardner's death. During the sentencing in April 2026, the judge described the act as 'cold-blooded' and stated that McCain had acted 'intentionally and with malice.' McCain, then 40, was sentenced to a prison term of 19 to 39 years. He was also ordered to pay over $14,500 in restitution. Though McCain offered an apology in court, it was rejected by Gardner's family.
