On a Father's Day in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, what began as a celebration ended in tragedy for 44-year-old Anthony Marshall. In the early morning hours of June 16, 2019, Marshall and his 25-year-old son, Tyquane Christian, were at a party on Lafayette Street. A dispute broke out involving another man and Shawn Nasim Connelly. Marshall and his son attempted to intervene and de-escalate the situation.
Following the altercation, Marshall and Christian left the party. However, their paths crossed again with Connelly, who was now accompanied by three other men. After a verbal exchange, Connelly drew a handgun and fired multiple shots at Marshall and his son. Marshall was struck in the torso and his son was wounded in the arm. Both men were transported to a local hospital, where Anthony Marshall succumbed to his injuries.
In September of that year, Shawn Nasim Connelly, already incarcerated on unrelated charges, was charged with the murder of Anthony Marshall. Investigators used witness interviews and surveillance footage to identify Connelly as the shooter. The video evidence reportedly showed Connelly pulling a gun from his waistband and firing at the victims before fleeing the scene with the other men.
Following a three-day trial in February 2022, a jury convicted Shawn Nasim Connelly of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and two counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied structure. Though the firearm used in the shooting was never recovered, the evidence presented was enough to secure a conviction. In May 2022, Connelly was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 9 to 20 years.
