In the early moments of January 31, 2024, the life of Derrick D. Eggleton, a 30-year-old Black/African American male from Pittsburgh, was tragically cut short. An argument, reportedly over something as trivial as a parking spot outside the Laundry Mat Bar in the Hill District, escalated into deadly violence. Just after 12:15 a.m., the sound of approximately 15 gunshots echoed near the intersection of Webster Avenue and Lawson Street, prompting multiple ShotSpotter alerts and a swift police response.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered a chaotic scene. Eggleton had sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen, a critical injury that would prove fatal. Another man was found with a gunshot wound to his arm. Both were rushed to UPMC Mercy Hospital, where Eggleton was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The second victim was reported to be in stable condition. The gunfire had not only struck the two men but had also damaged a nearby residence, riddling it with bullets, though thankfully no one inside was injured.
The investigation into the senseless killing of the man his family described as a devoted father and a selfless brother with a joyful spirit, led authorities to a suspect. On March 1, 2024, a multi-agency effort involving Pittsburgh police detectives, the U.S. Marshals Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force, and other law enforcement officials culminated in an arrest. Following a brief chase on foot, 46-year-old Deshawn Wallace was apprehended on the East Busway.
Wallace was subsequently charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, carrying a firearm without a license, and recklessly endangering another person. During his arrest, police also found narcotics in his possession, which led to additional charges. He was transported to the Allegheny County Jail to await legal proceedings. In the wake of their profound loss, Eggleton's family held a candlelight vigil and balloon release, remembering a man who brought laughter to those around him and hoping for justice to bring some measure of closure.
