Nathaniel Walker, a 48-year-old Black man, was a self-taught barber and a beloved father of six who was the foundation of his blended family. Described by a neighbor as a "really nice gentleman" who was always smiling, he was engaged to be married and well-loved in his community. His fiancée, Nikia Pitts, recalled texting with him on the afternoon of his death, a final exchange she did not know would be their last.
On the afternoon of April 19, 2024, Walker was inside a home on the 500
block of Lowell Street in Pittsburgh’s Larimer neighborhood when two masked men entered. A witness told police the men tried to rob Walker, and one of them shot him multiple times as they fled the house. Emergency responders were called to the scene around 2 p.m. but found Walker deceased. The shooting took place near a local school as students were returning from a field trip, alarming residents and shattering the peace of the spring day.
Pittsburgh police investigators quickly identified a vehicle seen leaving the area and arrested its driver, 25-year-old Heirkiess Moore-Smith of West Mifflin. Police determined that Moore-Smith had driven the two gunmen to and from the Lowell Street home, circling the block while they were inside. He had his 5-month-old baby in the car with him during the crime. Moore-Smith was subsequently charged with criminal homicide, robbery, criminal conspiracy, and endangering the welfare of a child.
At trial, Moore-Smith’s defense attorney argued that his client was merely giving the men a ride and did not know what they were planning to do. The prosecution presented evidence that Moore-Smith was a willing participant in the robbery that led to Walker’s death. After deliberating for about three and a half hours, an Allegheny County jury in June 2026 found Moore-Smith guilty of second-degree murder, robbery, criminal conspiracy, and endangering the welfare of children.
In September 2026, Walker’s family shared their profound loss with the court. His sister, Pamela Weatherspoon, and his fiancée spoke of the joy he brought to their lives and the emotional drain of his absence. Common Pleas Judge Edward Borkowski sentenced Moore-Smith, then 27, to serve 35 years to life in state prison for the murder, with an additional five to 10 consecutive years for the conspiracy charge. As of that sentencing, the two men who entered the home and shot Nathaniel Walker have not been publicly identified or charged.
