In the quiet community of Schnecksville, Pennsylvania, the life of 79-year-old Carol Ann Hartung, a White female, came to a tragic end on May 18, 2024. Her death, which occurred at her residence in North Whitehall Township, was the result of a devastating murder-suicide.
Authorities reported that Carol was fatally shot by her 78-year-old husband, Harvey H. Hartung Jr., who then took his own life. Both were pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 11 p.m. The Lehigh County Coroner's Office subsequently ruled Carol's death a homicide and Harvey's death a suicide. The Pennsylvania State Police and the Lehigh County District Attorney's Office investigated the incident, though a specific motive for the shooting was not publicly disclosed.
Carol and Harvey Hartung had been married since April 5, 1969. A 1962 graduate of Dieruff High School in Allentown, Carol went on to earn her Licensed Practical Nurse certification from the Allentown School of Practical Nursing in 1966. She dedicated 37 years of her career as an LPN at Cedarbrook Nursing Home in Allentown before her retirement. Remembered as a kind and beloved nurse, her sudden and violent death sent shockwaves through the community.
The couple is survived by their son and a granddaughter. In the wake of the tragedy, a private double graveside memorial service was held for both Carol and Harvey at Ebenezer Union Cemetery in New Tripoli. The family requested that memorial contributions be made to Forgotten Felines and Fidos, Inc., a reflection of the couple's shared compassion for animals.
