In the early evening of Wednesday, May 29, 2024, chaos erupted on the 2600 block of Jackson Street in the Grays Ferry section of South Philadelphia. At approximately 5:38 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting and discovered 50-year-old Hamilton Wyche lying in the street, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds throughout his body. The area was quickly cordoned off, with multiple bullet markers scattered across the pavement at 26th and Jackson streets.
Emergency responders
transported Wyche to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be too severe. He was pronounced dead shortly before 6 p.m. The shooting occurred near a Boys & Girls Club, where staff acted quickly to secure the building and ensure the safety of the children inside until they could be released to their parents. Investigators were able to utilize footage from Philadelphia Housing Authority cameras and police real-time crime cameras which captured the entire incident.
For a time, the search for the person responsible for Hamilton Wyche's death continued. However, on Friday, July 12, 2024, an arrest was made in the case. A suspect was taken into custody and has been charged with murder and other related offenses. The case is now pending trial. Hamilton Wyche was a resident of Osage Avenue in Philadelphia.
