An argument that began on a Philadelphia street escalated into a fatal confrontation on a subway platform, leaving a young man dead. The victim was identified as 21-year-old Joseph Lighty. The incident started as an 'animated conversation' on Broad Street, which then turned into a physical fight that moved down to the northbound platform of the Walnut-Locust SEPTA station.
During the altercation on the subway platform, a gun discharged, and a bullet struck Lighty in the leg.
Authorities later stated that the firearm involved was Lighty's own illegal ghost gun. After being shot, officers transported Lighty to Jefferson Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
SEPTA police arrested a suspect, identified as 36-year-old Phillip Riddick, as he was walking up the stairs of the subway station. Following the incident, Riddick was initially charged with absconding due to a failure to appear in court for an unrelated case. According to the District Attorney's Office, preliminary information from witnesses suggested that Lighty had instigated the initial argument with Riddick. Riddick was awaiting further charges in connection with Lighty's death.
