On a warm Saturday evening, June 1, 2024, the lively sounds of a basketball game at Fountain Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania, were shattered by gunfire. Angel Martinez-Velez, a 25-year-old male, was shot multiple times while on the court. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lehigh County Coroner's Office, who later ruled his death a homicide.
He was remembered by loved ones as a great friend, brother, son, husband, and father.
The brazen daylight shooting sent shockwaves through the community as investigators descended on the scene. Witnesses described seeing two masked gunmen, one in a distinctive red jacket, flee in a dark-colored Honda Accord, closely followed by a white Infiniti. Allentown's surveillance camera network proved crucial in the investigation. Police were able to track both vehicles as they sped away from the park, traveling together at high speed. Within two hours of the shooting, investigators located both cars near the East Court Street home of one of the suspects, Carlos Landesta-Agramonte. Inside one of the vehicles, they discovered clothing and masks that matched the descriptions provided by witnesses.
The investigation led to the arrest of five individuals in connection with the murder of Angel Martinez-Velez. The first to be taken into custody, just days after the shooting, were Grelvis Estevez Cabrera, 27, and Carlos Nathaniel Landesta-Agramonte, then 18. They were initially charged with conspiracy to commit criminal homicide and tampering with evidence. As the investigation progressed, more suspects were identified and apprehended. Wilmer Esequiel Marte-Tavarez, 22, was arrested and charged with criminal homicide, with prosecutors alleging his fingerprints were found on the Honda. Alfeni Romero-Tavares, 22, and Joel Garcia-Paulino, 22, were also charged with homicide and other offenses, with a witness identifying Romero-Tavares as one of the shooters and his DNA being found on clothing recovered after the incident.
The legal process brought a measure of justice for the killing of Angel Martinez-Velez. In November 2025, Carlos Landesta-Agramonte pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and conspiracy, receiving a sentence of 20 to 40 years in state prison. The following October, a jury convicted Grelvis Estevez Cabrera of first-degree murder, criminal homicide, conspiracy, and tampering with evidence. He was sentenced to a mandatory life in prison without the possibility of parole, with an additional 9 to 40 years for the conspiracy conviction. The remaining three defendants, Alfeni Romero-Tavares, Joel Garcia-Paulino, and Wilmer Esquiel Marte-Tavarez, are awaiting trial on charges including homicide and conspiracy.
