In the summer of 2024, the life of 19-year-old Maurice White was tragically cut short in a mass shooting in Philadelphia. The young man, a student at Bartram High School, was just two weeks away from his graduation. His family and friends remember him as a popular and non-violent person who was known for organizing parties to create positive experiences for the city's youth.

Philadelphia turned into a scene of chaos. A white Toyota Highlander drove by, and a passenger opened fire on the crowd. Maurice White was struck in the head and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Eight other individuals, with ages ranging from 15 to 24, were also wounded in the shooting. The incident was linked by city leaders to a roving pop-up party that had been dispersed by police earlier in the evening before reconvening at the location of the shooting. Investigators at the scene recovered numerous shell casings, including seventeen from a 9mm firearm.
For nearly two years, the case remained under investigation. Then, in April 2026, the Philadelphia Police Department publicly identified 19-year-old Naseem Sills as the suspect in the mass shooting. Authorities announced that Sills was wanted on homicide charges in connection with the death of Maurice White and the injuries to the other victims.
Following the public identification, Naseem Sills surrendered to the police. He turned himself in at the 9th district headquarters and was taken into custody. At the time of his surrender, it was expected that he would be formally charged with the murder of Maurice White. The investigation into the motive for the shooting was ongoing.
