In the summer of 2024, a political rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, became the scene of a tragedy that cut short the life of Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old man from Sarver. On that fateful day, July 13, Comperatore was attending the event with his wife and two daughters when gunfire erupted. In a final act of love and protection, he shielded his family from the bullets, a heroic gesture that would cost him his life.

Volunteer Fire Company, was remembered by his community as a dedicated family man and a selfless individual. His actions on the day of his death were a testament to the man he was, always putting the safety of his loved ones first. The attack also left two other individuals wounded.
The suspect in the shooting was identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks. Crooks had positioned himself on the roof of a nearby building and opened fire on the crowd. He was killed at the scene by U.S. Secret Service countersnipers, and therefore, no arrest was made.
In the wake of the tragedy, an investigation was launched into the security measures in place at the rally. This led to the suspension of six Secret Service agents who were found to have been complacent in their duties. While there will be no trial for the deceased gunman, the family of Corey Comperatore has continued to seek accountability for the security failures that contributed to his death.
