On August 13, 2024, 45-year-old Antoinette LaToya "Toi" Porterfield was tragically killed in her Homestead, Pennsylvania, residence. Her friend, John West, 54, was also found deceased at the scene. Both had suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
Authorities quickly identified Ms. Porterfield's son, 25-year-old John Malcolm Smith V, as a suspect in the double homicide. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots from the home and noted prior threats made by Smith towards his mother. Surveillance footage placed an individual matching Smith's description near the crime scene around the time of the incident.
The relationship between Ms. Porterfield and her son had been tumultuous, marked by numerous domestic violence incidents. Ms. Porterfield had previously secured a protection-from-abuse order against Smith, which he violated just days before the murders. At the time of the shooting, there was an active arrest warrant for Smith related to these violations.
Following the issuance of a be-on-the-lookout notice, Smith turned himself in to Pittsburgh police on August 14, 2024. He was subsequently charged with two counts of criminal homicide and tampering with evidence. As of the latest reports, Smith was awaiting arraignment, and no attorney information was available.
Ms. Porterfield was remembered fondly by her family and community. Born on March 14, 1979, she was known for her love of music, particularly as a fan of Tupac Shakur, and her dedication to caring for others, including feeding neighborhood children and tending to the elderly. Her untimely death has left a profound void among her loved ones.
