On January 5, 2023, officers from the Mount Olive Police Department responded to a reported shooting at 242 Franklin Street. Upon arrival, they found 33-year-old Anthony Fitzgerald Price in the passenger seat of a vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds. Wayne County Emergency Medical Services pronounced him deceased at the scene.
Following an extensive investigation, authorities identified 28-year-old Mount Olive resident, Tavoris Javon Mathis, as a suspect.
Warrants were issued for his arrest, charging him with an open count of murder and three counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. On January 7, 2023, Mathis surrendered to Mount Olive Police officers at the Wayne County Magistrate's Office in Goldsboro. He was subsequently placed in the Wayne County Jail without bond.
